Getting a tattoo can be an exciting, albeit permanent experience. With advancements in laser technology, however, tattoo removal has become a viable option for those wishing to remove or lighten their tattoos. Whatever the reason for wanting to remove your tattoo, laser is the only sensible way to go about it.

Treating an average-sized tattoo typically takes around 10 minutes at Dr Tattov.

The new laser technology of PicoSure Pro, exclusive to MedexWA and Dr Tattov, uses photomechanical technology to shatter the tattoo particles into much smaller fragments compared to Q-switch; this allows the body’s immune system to get rid of the ink pigmentation at a faster rate.

PicoSure patients report shorter recovery time compared to Q-switched lasers and also fewer treatments to remove the tattoo.

The PicoSure Pro laser makes tattoo removal even easier. It can treat:

  • Multi-coloured tattoos, including blues and greens

  • Hard-to-remove black ink

  • Stubborn, previously treated tattoos

The sophisticated system has 755nm wavelengths that targets black, blue, and green tattoo inks, whilst the 532nm wavelength effectively treats “sunset colours”—red, yellow and orange—which are typically hard to correct. There is also a Turbo Adjustable Pressure facility that can be used on tattoos treated elsewhere and that have stopped responding to treatment.

Things to remember about tattoo removals

Mature tattoos respond more quickly as the body has already absorbed some of the ink pigment, i.e., the tattoo has ‘faded’.

The greater the contrast between skin tone and tattoo pigment colour the easier/quicker will be the removal

White ink is frequently very difficult/unpredictable to remove as (i) it reflects rather than absorbs the light and (ii) can actually become darker because the ink often contains titanium oxide and/or zinc, both of which can darken with exposure to light. A laser test spot is essential a few weeks before planned treatment.

At gap of at least 6-8 weeks between treatment sessions is important to allow the body to remove the ink particles and reduce the chance of longer term skin changes.
